Top Entomology Flashcards

Entomology is the study of insects, and it’s one of the most important fields in biology and environmental science. You may think of insects as dull or even gross, but in fact they are beautiful creatures that form the backbone of our ecosystems. We depend on them to pollinate our crops, eat weeds, and protect us from harmful pests like mosquitos.

Entomology is a difficult science to study because there are just so many insects! Insects have been around for hundreds of millions of years, and are by far the most successful class of animals in the world. They’re so diverse that 90% of the animal species are in the insect class. That means everything else - all the mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, arachnids, worms, sponges, all of it! - fits into just 10% of the animal kingdom.

Why have insects been so successful? What allowed them to dominate the world the way they do? And how can we use our knowledge of insects to help solve human problems like hunger and disease? These are the big questions that entomology can help us answer.
