Name the safety and health precautions to be observed in operating a dope room, including storage of material.
Well lite and ventilated. Use Spark proof motors, lights and switches. Store in fire proof containers and isolated from other chemicals.
What type of test can be performed to identify existing paint finishes?
Apply a coat of engine oil to a small area. Nitrocellulose paint will soften, whereas, Epoxy and acrylic will show no effect. Wipe down the surface with MEK to check between Epoxy and Acrylic, the MEK will pickup pigment from the Acrylic finish. No effect to Epoxy.
What causes blushing when applying dope or lacquer, and how can it be prevented?
When apply dope under humid conditions, blushing is possible. (Milky white or cloudy appearance). Also caused by moisture in the air supply, drafts and or change in temperature. Prevent by heating the room to decrease humidity or by using a blush-retarding thinner.
What is the purpose of fungicidal dope when finishing aircraft fabric?
Prevents the fabric from rotting.
What are the identification marking requirements for United States registered fixed wing aircraft?
Roman capital letter "N" followed by the registration number. at least 12" in height and 2/3 wide as it is high.
What are two types of dope used for aircraft finishes?
Nitrate and Butyrate
What is the advantage of butyrate over Nitrate?
Less Flammable
What would happen if dope was ever used over paint or enamel?
It would remove the paint or enamel over time.
What is applied to metallic surfaces as a common resistance covering before the application of enamel or lacquer?
Zinc chromate primer
What are the most methods of applying aircraft finishes?
Dipping, Brushing, or Spraying.
What type of paint may be used over any paint system that is in good condition?
Epoxy topcoats.
What is normally the cause of runs and sags in a spray application of a paint finish?
Holding the gun too close to the surface or holding the gun too long in one place.
What causes an "orange peel" or "pebble" finish?
Incorrect spray gun setting, incorrect air pressure, incorrect paint viscosity, and holding the gun too far away.
What is used to thin the chromate primer?
Toluene.
