Front Back
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
A United States Enivronmental Lawthat established a U.S. national policy promoting the enhancement of the environment and also established the CEQ.
Feedback loop
The path by which some of the output of a circuit, system, or device is returned to the input.
Positive feedback loop
A process in which the effects of a small disturbance on a system include an increase in the magnitude of the perturbation
Negative feedback loop
Information about a gap between the actual value and a reference value of a system parameter is used to reduce the gap
Homeostasis
The tendency of a system, especially the physiological system of higher animals, to maintain internal stability, owing to the coordinated response of its parts to any situation or stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function.
Genes
The basic physical unit of heredity; a linear sequence of nucleotides along a segment of DNA that provides the coded instructions for synthesis of RNA, which, when translated into protein, leads to the expression of hereditary character
Gene Mutations
Changes in a genomic sequence: the DNA sequence of a cell's genome or the DNA or RNA sequence of a virus
Inorganic compounds
Any substance in which two or more chemical elements other than carbon are combined, nearly always in definite proportions
Law of conservation of matter
A fundamental principle of classical physics that matter cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system
Law of conservation of energy
The fundamental principle of physics that the total energy of an isolated system is constant despite internal changes
1st law of thermodynamics
The change in the internal energy of a closed system is equal to the amount of heat supplied to the system, minus the amount of work performed by the system on its surroundings
2nd law of thermodynamics
An expression of the tendency that over time, differences in temperature, pressure, and chemical protection equilibrate
Energy efficiency
The goal of efforts to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services
Ecology
The branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms.
Organism
A form of life composed of mutually interdependent parts that maintain various vital processes.
