Where did the strongest resistance to white settlement come from?
Native Americans in the Northwest Territory. (bordered by Ohio R. to the S. and Canada to the N.)
Battle of Fallen Timbers
On August 20, 1794, 2,000 Natives fought with Anthony Wayne's troops. The Native Americans were defeated.
Little Turtle
A chief who's force came from many tribes including the Shawnee, Ottawa, and Chippewa. Defeated Americans twice, then advised other chiefs to negotiate when Wayne took control of another attack. Chiefs replaced him with a different leader, who wasn't as good.
General Anthony Wayne
Known as "Mad Anthony" for being recklessly brave.. Beat the Native Americans in the Battle of Fallen Timbers
Treaty of Greenville
Twelve Tribes signed this in 1795. They agreed to cede much of present-day Ohio and Indian to the U.S. gov't.
The Whiskey Rebellion
In 1794, a group of farmers rebelled against the Whiskey tax. Washington sent troops out, which successfully crushed the rebellion. Proved that the U.S. would enforce its laws.
The French Revolution
In 1789, the French Revolution started b/c of a financial crisis.  It was inspired by the American Revolution. Became very violent by 1792, and France made war on many nearby monarchs. Put the U.S. in an awkward situation.

Not siding with one country or the other. In April 1793, the U.S. declared itself neural during the war btwn. France and Britain (during the French Revolution)
How did Britain make it hard for the U.S. to remain neutral?
The British would seize the cargos of American ships with goods from the French West Indies.
Jay's Treaty
In 1794, the British agreed to leave the Ohio Valley by 1796 and repay damages to U.S. ships..  Jay's Treaty was unpopular, though, because Jay couldn't open up the profitable British West Indies to trade w/ Americans.
Thomas Pinckney
Helped the U.S. reduce tensions along the frontier. Made Pinckney's Treaty in 1795.
Chief Justice John Jay
Sent to England for negotiations on the seuzure of U.S. ships. Jay created Jay's Treaty.
Pinckney's Treaty
In 1795, Spain let Americans travel freely on the Mississippi River. Let them store goods at the port of New Orleans w/o paying customs duties. Also cleared up border misunderstandings.
