Explain how "new" imperialism differed from imperialism of earlier centuries.
New imperialism had investment of capital, employing native population, make arrangements w/local government.
Who were the major imperialist powers in Europe?
They were Germany, Britain, and France. They were modern, western industrialized, and had loyal people to government.
What were the motives for the new imperialism?
The motives were safe sources, higher profits, international prestige, new markets, national security, surplus population, and social Darwinism.
Which African countries remained independent throughout the age of imperialism?
Ethiopia and Liberia. Africa was easy to takeover because technology (guns, etc.)

The treaty of Berlin was the final decision of the congress of Berlin the settlement of Balkans (Austria-Hungary got Bosnia).
Explain how the triple alliance formed.
Italy asks to join dual alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary. Russia dropped out of emperor's league because Austria & Russia competition. Ottoman Empire declined in power. 3 emperor league was made from Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary.
Explain how the triple entente was formed.
Franco Russo alliance (investments both excluded from triple alliance and common rivalry. England eventually joins them.

Nationalism, imperialism, mobilization, alliances, and the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.
Why did Gavrilo Princip assassinate Archduke Francis Ferdinand?
Because he was a Serbian nationalist, wanted unification of Slavic states under the rule of Serbia.
Who are the Allied powers?Central Powers?
The Allied powers were Britain, France, Russia, Italy, USA, Serbia. The Central Powers were Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Ottoman Empire.
What was the Schlieffen Plan?
Was a German strategy to take out France in six weeks, then to invade Russia.
What impact did the war have on the economy and the people at home?
The effect was total war (complete mobilization of all available resources in population)everyone was involved included donations, factories, etc.
What effect did the war have an organized labor and women?
Led to women getting the right to vote,more opportunities, factory work, agriculture work, greater power given to labor unions.
What were the reasons for the Russian Revolution in March 1917? Why did the Russian provisional government fail?
Russia unprepared for war. Czar family fell under the influence of Rasputin. Overthrow of czar, subdivisional government, people unhappy because wanted to get out of World War I.

The Soviets were a workers group in Russia.
