Front Back
ABSORPTION
The drawing up of a liquid through a mass, permeating the bulk of the absorbing material.
ACIDIC
Having a pH less than 7; will turn litmus paper pink.
ADSORPTION*
Special kind of 'absorption' restricted to the adhesion of material to the surface of the bodies attached either by chemical bonds or van der Waals' forces.
ALKALINE
"basic"; having a pH greater than 7; will turn litmus paper blue.
ANHYDROUS*
"without water" all water has been removed from the substance and therefore it will absorb water readily.
AQUEOUS PHASE
The liquid layer in which water is the solvent.
AZEOTROPE*
A mix of two or more substances that distill at a constant temperature/composition even though they have different boiling points.
This occurs when intermolecular bonds such as H-bonding takes place.
BENCHTOP EXTRACTION
Process of recovering a desired product after it has been spilled on teh benchtop. Solids are scaped and purified by recrystallization. Liquids are soaked via cotton that has been soaked with suitable solvent.
BOILING CHIPS
Porous aldundum which release bubbles of entrapped air. Bubbles provide path which vapour of boiling liquid can be smooth led to the surface and released.
BOILING POINT
Temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid is equal to hte atmospheric pressure. This is constant for a pure substance.
BUMPING*
Sudden violent surge of vapour breaking from the surface of a boiling liquid. Can be prevented by addition of boiling chips or stirring.
CAPILLARY ACTION
Elevation or depression and of adhesion and cohesion of a liquid observed in a thin tube which is placed in a liquid. Due to surface tension.
CARCINOGENIC
Cancer causing agent, which may cause death or permanent damage after repeated exposures over a long period of time.
CATALYSIS
Acceleration of a chemical reaction by catalyst which does not participate in the reaction.
CELITE
White power made up of diatomaceous earth used during filtration to prevent sall particles from passing through filter paper.
