Games that are developed quickly along tactical lines. Often start with 1. p-k4 2. p-k4. Also often has pawns behind main pieces.

|
Games that are developed more slowly and strategically. Often start with 1. p-q4 2. p-q4. Also often has pawns in front of main pieces.

The French and Scicillian are two. Often start with 1. p-k4 and a non p-k4 response by black.

|
Dutch and Indian are two. Often start with 1. p-q4 and a non p-q4 response by black.

What is the difference between regular and irregular defense?
|
Regular openings are commonly played by masters, while irregular openings are not.

What is a smothered mate?
|
When a king's own forces prevent him from moving out of mate. It can only be accomplished by a knight.

What is a "tempo"?
|
A tempo is measure of time in terms of moves. When a player gains a tempo, it means he has forced his opponent to waste one or more moves.
A common example would be a pawn attacking a more important piece, forcing the opponent to move them out of the way. Check is another common example. |

What is a gambit?
|
A deliberate sacrifice of a piece (usually a pawn) in exchange for better board position.

What is a counter-gambit?
|
A gambit performed by black.
|

What does it mean to accept or decline a gambit?
|
An accepted gambit means that the piece being offered for sacrifice is taken. A declined gambit requires the piece to not be taken.

What type of opening is the scicilian (open, closed, etc.)?
|
It is a semi-open opening. It leans towards a heavy attack on white's queen side.
