Can You Define the Following Eye Injury Flashcards

Can you define the following eye injuries? These flashcards will help you ace any test on eye injuries. An example of a typical eye injury is scratched eye (corneal abrasion). Common causes of abrasions to the eye’s surface are getting poked in the eye or rubbing the eye when something is stuck in it. Etiology of subconjunctival hemorrhage
SpontaneousIncrease in Venous pressure *Valsalva while coughing, sneezing, vomiting, straining*Traumatic-Major (blunt)-Minor (contact lenses)
Risk factors for subconjunctival hemorrhage
HTNDMBleeding disordersAnticoagulant therapy
In which population is subconjunctival hemorrhage common?
The elderly
Clinical manifestation of subconjunctival hemorrhage
Focal and flat, sharply demarcated area of bleed between sclera and conjunctiva - basically their eye is blood red, ith clear distinction of where blood stops.NOTE: patient will have normal visual acuity without pain or sensation of foreign body, photophobia or discharge
Treatment for subconjunctival hemorrhage
Self-resolving, so watch and wait as blood is absorbed over 2-3 weeks, with follow up with opthalmology with tramatic hemorrhages to evaluate for retinal trauma
Globe rupture etiology
1. Blunt or penetrating injury leading to scleral rupture2. Blunt traumaa. direct force, transmitted wave force, rebound wave forceb. abrupt increase in IntraOcular Pressure3. Penetrating injurya. any projectileb. eyelid laceration/penetration
Where does the globe rupture
At the thinnest point of the sclera, limbus, or insertion of the intraocular muscles
Where is a Zone 1 injury?
Inury to cornea or limbus
Where is a zone 2 injury?
Injury to anterior 5 mm of sclera
Where is a zone 3 injury?
5 mm posterior to the limbus
What is Seidel sign?
Aqueous Humor that is leaking from the anterior chamber will wash away fluorescein dye **EVIDENCE OF PENETRATING GLOBE INJURY**
Question 14
What is Seidel sign used to test for?
Penetrating globe injury dye will be washed away if the globe is ruptured (allowing aqueous humor to leak from anterior chamber)
What injury are Marcus Gunn pupils seen in?
Ruptured globe, causing afferent defect.
