Articles of Confederation
Created at the Second Continental Congress and ratified on November 15, 1777. Gave too much responsibility to gov't and too little power.
Structure of the Articles
The governeny would have not Judicial or Executive branch, just Legislative.
Weaknesses of the Articles
The Congress could make laws, but there was not enough power to enforce them, making the Central Gov't nearly useless.
Shays's Rebellion
Shays, a farmer, took over a court house with other farmers. It was the last straw and proved that the Art. of Conf. needed to be changed.

The Convention where the Constitution was drafted.

Rich white men with land. Alexander Hamilton and James Madison are two prominent Framers

Suggested that the Framers were all influenced by money.
James Madison
A shy, unpopular man. Considered the Father of the Constitution.
Alexander Hamilton
A very conservative framer. He suggested that the president have a life term in office.

Proposed Population-weighted representation among other things

Proposed equal representation among all states and other things.
Great Compromise
Eac state has equal rep. in Senate and pop. weighted rep. in house of reps.
Slavery and the Constitution
One slave counts for 3/5 a person in rpresentation and taxing. Also, slavery could not be dealt with for 20 years after constitutions was ratified.
Decisions on the Executive Branch
4-year terms, no term limit, head of army, veto power.
Full Faith and Credit
One thing in one state means the same in another. ex. a marriage in MD is still valid in VA.
