What are the characteristics of an ionic bond?
They transfer electrons, they are formed between metals and nonmetals, the bond happens between ions, they are good conductors, and due to their lattice structure they have a high melting and boiling point.
What are the characteritics of a covalent bond?
They share the electrons, it happens between a nonmetal and a metal, boned between neutral molecules, they aren't good conductors, and they have a low melting and boiling point
What is the difference between polyatomic and diatomic molecules?
Polyatomic = between 3 or more atoms
Diatomic = between 2 atoms
What is the difference between nonpolar and polar covalent bonds?
Polar = When electrons are shared unequally
Non-Polar = When electrons are equally
What is are the characteristics of metallic bonds?
It is between 2 metal atoms, positive metal ions are fixed inplace while the electrons are free to move about, holds strongly, bend more than break, very high melting point and they are good conductors at all states.
Do non-metals or metals want to gain an electron?
Non-metal = gain
Metals = lose
How do you determine electronegativity?
The higher and the more to the right, the more electronegative the element is. Exept for the last column because they have a full outer shell.
