Looking at the scientific method, on what is science based?
The experiment - Empiracal - the knowledge that is based on experience and observations that are rational, testable and repeatable
What is the smalled unit of life that can be considered alive?
A cell
Where is the greatest concentration of nitrogen? Which organisms make it usable?
In the Atmosphere (78%) Bacteria
What three chemical elements are present in all living organisms? What is the additional chemical element in proteins?
Oxygen, carbon and hydrogen-nitrogen
How are carbohydrates classified? Give examples of each group.
Carbs are classified by size. Carbon Hydrogen and oxygen.
Monosaccharides or simple sugars: glucose, found in sap and fruit of many plants and fructose.
Polysaccharides and complex carbohydrate: cellulose and chitin and starch.
What are the two major groups of cells? How do they differ?
Eukaryotic cell: Evolve 1.5 billion years after Prokaryotes, "Good and Kernel" has a nucleus which contains the cells DNA. Organisms composed of eukaryotic cells are eukaryotes. Much larger, domain Eukarya, much more advanced.
Prokaryotic Cell: First to evolve, "Before and Kernel" does not have a nucleus; its DNA simply resides in the middle of the cell. Organisms composed of prokaryotic cells are prokaryote. Bacteria and Archea domains, smaller and fewer structural features.
7. What are organelles? Name one organelle that is found only in animal cells. Name two organelles that are found only in plant cells.
Specialized structures in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells with specific functions, such as the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and mitochondria. Animal: Lyosomes Mitochondria: the power house of the cell, converts energy at the chemical level for all tasks, has own set of DNA. Plant Only: Cell wall: surrounds plasma membrane, made up of polysaccharide cellulose. Vacuole: cells back up nutrients and waste, poisons, and pigments. Chloroplasts: site of photosynthesis, similar shape to photosynthetic bacteria.
What is the commonest cause of pollution in streams, rivers, and oceans?
Siltation
Where is the largest proportion of water on earth? Is it usable for drinking water?
Oceans, No
What does “biodiversity” mean?
The variety and variability among all genes, species and ecosystems.
What forms of energy are used in plants? What form of energy is used in animals?
Plants Energy: Chloropasts Animal Energy: Glycolysis and the Kreb Cycle
What energy process is used in plants? What energy process is used in animals?
Plants: Cellular respiration and photosynthesis Animals: Glycolysis, Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain
What organelle houses chlorophyll for photosynthesis? What organelle is the “powerhouse” of the cell?
Chloroplasts and Mitochondria
Name three fossil fuels. Are they renewable or non-renewable?
Gasoline, oil and natural gas Non-renewable: oil, and natural gas, coal Renewable: wood
What fossil fuel is considered the cleanest? Name two alternative energy sources.
Natural Gas Kinetic and Potential Energy
