How Does Your Engine Run?

This corresponds with the program "How does your engine run." These cards are good for students who have a hard time regulating their behavior and or whom have a hard time taking in their environement and processing it appropriately.  These cards help a student recognize the different engine levels.  Take it a step further and challenge them to come up with strategies to bring the engine level back to 'just right!'

While the teacher is giving a lesson a student gets up and walks across the room and begins talking to a teacher.
Engine level: high The student is having a hard time focusing on the teacher. Maybe he is excited about something he wants to tell his friends? Maybe he has a lot of energy?
While the teacher is giving a lesson a student pulls out a book and begins reading.
Engine level: high The student is having a hard time focusing on the teacher.
While the teacher is giving a lesson at the board a student puts his/her head on the desk and rests.
Engine level: high or low If the student is frustrated or overwhelmed he may disconnect from the situation by placing his head on desk. (High) If the student is bored and or tired he may put his head on desk. (Low)
A student walks into the cafeteria and the loud noise begins to bother him.
Engine Level: high The loud noise in the cafeteria makes the student anxious and flustered.
A student walks into the cafeteria and see's so many kids and commotion that he becomes overwhelmed.
Engine level: high When an environment is very 'busy' it overwhelms the student and makes him anxious.
A student becomes upset with his peer and begins yelling at him.
Engine level: high The student is having a hard time controlling his anger and so he begins yelling.
A student accidentally gets pushed while standing in line. He becomes very angry and pushes over a chair.
Engine level: high The student does not know how to control his anger, he vents by pushing over a chair.
A student is working in a group. No one is listening to him and it is making him mad so he gets really close to his peers and starts talking really loud.
Engine level: high The student is not coping with his anger very well. He is not maintaining personal space nor is he talking at an appropriate voice level.
A student is working on math and becomes very confused and frustrated. He breaks his pencil.
Engine level: high The student is not coping with his frustration well and breaks his pencil.
A student is working silently on his math when another peer walks but and kicks his chair. He continues to work on his math.
Engine level: Just right!! The student is able to maintain focus even though there is things going on in his environment.
A student is crying because he does not know how to do his assignment.
Engine level: high The student is not coping with his frustration and begins to cry.
A student is very nervous because he has to give a speech in front of all his peers. He is shaking.
Engine level: high The student is so nervous he is shaking!
A student is quietly reading a book with the rest of the class.
Engine level: Just right!! The student is able to maintain focus even though there is things going on in his environment.
A student is trying really hard to figure out a math problem but can't understand it. He accepts the help of his friend.
Engine level: Just right! The student finds a way to cope with his frustration and is still able to complete his work.
A student isn't paying attention because he is tired.
Engine level: Low The student has not found a way to make himself alert in able to pay attention.
