El Greco (Doménikos Theotokópoulos)

(1541-1614). Settled in Toledo under the sponsorship of the governor, for whom he painted many religious works. The artistic style used by El Greco has been called realistic mysticism created by himself in Spain. One of El Greco’s masterpieces is Burial of the Count of Orgaz.

Diego Velázquez
|
(1599-1660) is the father of Spanish realism. He painted The Water Carrier of Seville. He made things look real and treated noblemen, tradesmen, and peasants with dignity and respect. He is the greatest Spanish artist of the classical era.

Francisco de Goya
|
Went to Madrid and became famous for the rococo and the neobaroque styles of art. He painted: social customs of Spanish peasant life, royal court, innocent victims of the Napoleonic forces, then later as he was depressed painted people and things distorted and ugly way. The Parasol is one of his best paintings.
