Have you ever turned on your TV and been instantly hooked on Keeping up with the Kardashian’s or Jersey Shore. I have on many occasions.Reality shows have became big obsessions and I’ve always wondered why.
According to Time Magazine, more than 50% of the shows on TV are reality shows. How many of YOU love reality Shows?
Today, I will talk to you about why reality shows entertain us, what is so realistic about them, some of the top reality shows, and tell you some statistics.
Reality shows entertain us for many reasons. But the most common reasons are because of humiliation and drama. People love reality shows because of humiliation because it keeps us entertained and laughing and just wanting more.
We also love these shows because of drama going on because the viewers will always come back to watch every week and continue to wonder, who's stealing who's man, who's cheating on who's girl, who hates who and more. Watching other people's drama without actually having to get involved is always a plus.
Now I’ll talk to you about what is so real about these shows. You may not know this, but the majority of these shows aren’t actually real. Yes, they are real people, with real problems. But put together with A LOT of editing by the producers.
According to Time Magazine, the producers of these reality shows go through a process called “Frankenbiting”. Frankenbiting is when the people incharge of entertainment of the show, take filmed scenes, and switch them around and out of order to make it look better, even if in real life, that episode didn’t really happen the way it appears on TV.
Frankenbiting is also used to change what people say. For example, if you were on a reality show, talking to a camera. And you said that you hated someone or loved someone, the producers will put in different names or words than you said, to get the viewers more interested.
Next, I will tell you about some of the currently most popular reality shows. There are lots and lots of reality shows on television. There are Prank reality, celebrity reality, game shows, talent hunts, adventure, and fear based shows.
In 2011, Jersey Shore and Keeping up with the Kardashians were the top two reality shows of the year. They are both considered celebrity reality. Before these shows came out on TV, I had never heard of the people in them. I know a lot of people that don’t understand why the Kardashian’s are famous, and after thinking about it, they aren’t really famous for anything, except having a REALLY entertaining show. And, same with Jersey Shore, of course the cast is famous now, but what did they do before the show?
Last year, The Voice and American Idol were also on the top ten list. These shows are both considered talent hunts. Since, the voice is newer, and better, American Idol is slowly going down and isn’t even expected to be on the top ten list this year.
Last but not least, Fear factor. Fear Factor used to be a very popular show around the country, and I personally loved it and hated it at the same time. I didn’t really understand why people would volunteer to eat bugs, even if it was for $50,000. I would need at least a million dollars. But, the Fear Factor was only on for two seasons, and will occasionally play reruns. Now, I will tell you some facts.
There are many things about reality shows that I would have never guessed to be true. As I’ve said before, more than 50% of the shows on TV right now, are reality shows. And Americans spend 1/3 of their free time watching television and of that 67% are reality shows.
Reality shows have been a very debatable topic among the government. Our government is concerned that other countries think of our country as shallow, because we make random people famous for doing nothing, while the producers are just doing all of the work to make their show as fake as possible.
According to Medical Procedure News, reality television is attributing to cosmetic surgery procedures with more than 9.2 million procedures performed as result of people watching these shows. And since the boom of reality television in 2000, eating disorders in teenage girls (ages 13-19) have nearly trippled.
Reality TV is definitely to blame for all of these medical procedures and eating disorders in girls. These people will do anything to look as good as the stars on TV.
Today, I have talked about why reality shows entertain us, what is so real about them, and told you some statistics.
These reality shows are getting bigger and bigger and getting more viewers each year. So next time you’re watching a reality show, don’t believe everything you hear.
