Front Back
Speed
Describes movement from one place to another over a period of time.
Velocity
Describes movement from one place to another over a period of time in a certain direction.
Acceleration
A change of speed overtime.
Newton's First Law of Motion & Example
An object at rest will stay at rest, unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
Ex: A skateboarder hitting a rock and falling.
Condensed Version: There is a natural tendency of objects to keep doing what they are doing.
Newton's Second Law of Motion & Example
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass.
F=ma
Ex: A football filled with sand requires more force to be moved than a regular football.
Condensed Version: Heavier objects require more force to move the same distance than lighter objects.
Newton's Third Law of Motion & Example
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Ex: A rocket pushes down on the ground with the force of its engines and the ground pushes back.
Condensed Version: Whenever an object pushes another object, it gets pushed back in the opposite direction and equally as hard.
Momentum
A measurement equal to an object's mass times velocity.
P=mv
Law of Conservation of Momentum
States that as long as interacting objects are not influenced by outside forces their momentum before the interaction will be equal to their momentum after the collision.
Ex: When a gun is shot and it kicks backwards or when a baseball hits the bat.
What keeps a roller coaster on the tracks as it goes through a loop?
Gravity is counter-acted by the force of acceleration, which is the force that pushes you forwards.
Explain how seat belts and airbags help save lives.
Seat belts help restrict people in a car of movement. When a car crashes the people will stay in place, and not continue on with the momentum of the car.
Explain a safety feature that can help prevent whiplash.
The airbags help prevevnt whiplash because it does ot allow your head to smash into the wheel or dashboard. The headrest must also be adjusted correctly to prevent whiplash.
A body in motion tends to...
Stay in motion.
An object at rest tends to...
Stay at rest.
An object with more mass has...
More inertia.
What is the relationship between force and acceleration?
DIrect relationship
F=ma
