What is direct democracy?
Athens was a direct democracy which meant that every citizen voted on every issue.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of direct democracy?
Benefits: It makes all voters equal and gives everyone an equal voice and power. Disadvantages: very very time-consuming and impractical; also, there is zero protection for the rights of minority
What is a polis? Describe what this means.
A polis was a city and the surrounding land, including villages. The average polis cpvered 50-100 square miles and usually was home to fewer than 10,000 residents. The political and social centers of the polis were the agora or acropolis.
What is the evidence supporting the Trojan War?
Evidence of the city of Troy was found and some of the people mentioned in the Illiad
Who won the Trojan War and how did they do it?
The Greeks left a wooden horse to the Persians as a parting gift. After a night of heavy celebrations, the Trojans brought the horse into their city. The Greeks who were hiding in the horse finally defeated the Trojans.
Who fought in the Peloponnesian War and who won?
Sparta and Athens fought in the war and the Spartans won.
Why did Sparta and Athens fight in the Peloponnesian War?
As tensions grew between Sparta and Athens, leaders of both cities were pushing for war because each thought that they would win. Finally, Sparta declared war on Athens.
How many goals did Pericles have for Athens and what were they? How did he plan to accomplish these?
Pericles had three goals for Athens: 1. Strengthen democracy *He wanted to increase the number of paid public officials to enable poor citizen to hold office. *Continue to practice direct democracy, giving all male citizens a voice2.
