Why did you decide to become a teacher?
There really isn't a decisive date as to when I decided I wanted to be a teacher. I always enjoyed school, and thought teaching would be an awesome profession. I cannot see myself doing anything else.
Do you consider yourself a risk taker?
In general, not really. In the classroom, though, I will always attempt new things to increase student involvement. That includes doing things that I may initially find risky, but may or may not work in the classroom.
Are you a positive, energetic person?
I am a positive person - I'm always looking for the good in people and in situations. And if I am excited about something, I can become energetic. I love teaching students, and I always try getting them excited about school, so I do my best to have an energetic feeling about me when I am in the classroom.
If a student said she thought you were the worst teacher she ever had, what would you say?
We would sit down and have a discussion about this. I would ask her why she doesn't think I am a good teacher, and ask for her opinion on how I can change some things to make her feel more comfortable with me.
If I were your principal and we were setting goals for next year, what would they be?
Better management, more standards met,
Some people say you should demand respect. Do you agree or disagree?
I disagree. I think respect should be earned. As a teacher, I would like my students to respect me because I respect each of them as individuals.
How would you rank these in importance and why? Planning, discipline, methods, evaluation.
Evaluation is first, because you need to evaluate your students and your teaching methods to see what kind of planning, discipline, and methods are necessary. Discipline, or classroom management, is second because the class needs to be engaged and focused in order for the planning and methods to be effective.Planning is third because you have to be prepared to teach your students in the small amount of time allotted. Methods are fourth because they are based on your evaluation and plan. And you can't choose a method until you make a plan.
If a student came to you and said "None of the other students like me", what would you do?
I would listen and reassure the student that she can make friends. I would give her tips on how to act to become more friendly or open. I would also consider doing an ego-boosting assignment in class. I would have each student write one positive thing about each of their classmates, and then eventually give each student the anonymous list of what each of their classmates said about them.
Are you an empathetic person? Give an example.
It depends on the situation. If it is a student who is having problems, I am completely empathetic towards them.
How can you tell that a person is a good listener?
Good eye contact, the listener will nod and smile, or give auditory feedback, will encourage you to continue talking, will repeat what you say when appropriate, will only finish your sentence when appropriate, listener will keep the conversation focused on your topic of discussion, will listen 80% of the time and talk 20% of the time, and they will ask thoughtful, open-ended questions about the topic you have been talking about
Do you believe you should build rapport with students? If yes, how?
Building rapport with students is very important if you want a safe, friendly classroom. When I substitute teach, I like telling the students a bit about myself at the beginning of the class. I like to smile, laugh, allow them to make appropriate jokes and comments, and try to maintain the friendly atmosphere throughout the day.
How do you feel if a student does not meet a deadline?
How i feel about this depends on what the deadline was for. How long did the student have to meet it, how important is it to meet this deadline, and how often does this student not meet deadlines? If it is a student who never misses deadlines, then I will try to figure out why this student did not turn in their work. If it happened every day with a particular student, I will try to find ways to make it more beneficial for this student to do the work on time.
What was the most frustrating thing that happened to you as a student teacher? The best thing?
There was one seventh grade girl who just wouldn't take no for an answer. She was constantly testing me to see how much she could get away with, and she wouldn't back down until I finally gave her a referral for detention. For the rest of the school year, she would shoot me the dirtiest looks, but I continued to treat her the same way as all the other students.
How do you give your students recognition? Do you think a student can have too much recognition?
I usually give recognition verbally. In some past classes I have substituted in, especially kindergarten, I hand out stickers to exceptional students. The only way I could see a student having too much recognition is if that is the only student being recognized for their exceptional work. That would alienate the other students who are doing just as well.
How do you encourage students to learn? Can a student be forced to learn?
I encourage students to learn by introducing the lesson and information in a way that sparks the students' interest. I constantly give positive verbal feedback and ask questions that keep the students interested. A student cannot be forced to learn. If you push them too hard, they will shut down.
