Front Back
Transpyloric Plane- Vertebral level and markers
Vertebra Level = L1, marks pylorus of stomach as it enters duodenum, head and body of pancreas, transverse mesocolon, renal vessels and ureters, superior mesenteric artery branching from aorta.
Subcostal Plane- Level and Markers
Level: L3. Markers: Lower edge of costal margin, inferior mesenteric artery, 3rd part of duodenum
Supracristal Plane- Level and Markers
Level: L4. Markers: Highest point on iliac crests and bifurcation of aorta into common iliac arteries.
Transtubercular Plane: Level and Markers
Level: L5. Markers: Intersects Tubercles of iliac crest, common iliac veins join to form IVC.
9 Abdominal Regions- Left to Right
Right hypochondriac, epigastric, left hypochondriac, right lateral, umbilical, left lateral, right inguinal, hypogastric, left inguinal
Mesenteries
Double Layers of peritoneum formed by continuity of visceral and parietal peritoneum. Conduits for neurovasculature, tethers organs to body wall, allows organ mobility.
Greater Omentum
Attaches to greater curvature of stomach, extends to the transverse colon, the spleen, and the diaphragm. Encloses greater sac.
Gastrocolic Ligament
Attaches greater omentum to transverse colon
Gastrosplenic Ligament
Attaches greater omentum to the spleen
Lesser Omentum
Attaches to liver and extends to lesser curvature of stomach and the duodenum. Encloses the lesser sac or omental bursa.
Epiploic Foramen
Opening of lesser sac into greater sac. Located between hepatoduodenal ligament and PAW.
Transverse Mesocolon
Mesentery of transverse colon. Divides Abdominal cavity into 2 : supracolic and infracolic.
Supracolic Compartment Contains...
Stomach, biliary tree, liver, and spleen
Infracolic Compartment contains...
SI, ascending and descending colons. Split into right and left halves by the mesentery of the intestine.
