Before electricity, system of weights suspended on a cable powered a clockwork mechanism beneath the lantern to rotate the lenses (or make the light flash) - much like the workings of a grandfather clock. The keeper cranked the weights up by hand every two and a half hours.

You should watch your step; because brick walkways are uneven.
