Microbiology
Study of small living organisms
Pathogenic
  • Cause infection & disease
  • Some produce toxins and spread easily
  • Live everywhere in the environment
  • Spread by the use of contaminated implements
Non-Pathogenic
  • Do not produce disease
  • Can be very beneficial
Saprophytes
  • Non-Pathogenic - live on dead matter and do not produce disease
  • Approximately 70% of all bacteria are nonpathogenic and live on the surface of the skin
Cocci
  • Round - Appear in groups or singularly
Question 6
Staphylococci
  • Bunches - Found in boils & pus forming
Question 7
Streptococci
  • Long Chains - Cause strep throat & pus forming
Question 8
Diplococci
  • Pairs - Cause pneumonia
Question 9
Bacilli
  • Rod - Most common form of bacterial cells
Question 10
Spirilla
  • Spiral - Cause syphilis, lyme disease, cholera
Active stage of bacteria
  • Reproduce and grow rapidly
  • Require dark, damp, dirty places with food
  • Divide into new cells (mitosis)
Inactive stage of bacteria
  • No growth occurs when conditions are unfavorable
  • Spores not harmed by disinfectants, cold or heat
  • Become active when conditions are favorable
Movement of bacteria
  • Bacteria travel easily from place to place through air or water because of tiny size
  • Bailli and spirilla use flagella (cilia) to propel themselves
Viruses
  • Sub-microscopic particles; much smaller than bacteria
  • Replicates itself only in cells of living hosts
  • Cause familiar diseases like the common cold, measles, HBV and HIV
Human Hepatits B (HBV)
  • Highly infectious disease the infects the liver
  • Vaccine-preventable disease
  • Personal service workers are often inoculated
