Model
A simplified representation or abstraction of reality. It can calculate risks, understand uncertainty, change variables and manipulate time.
Transactional Information
All information contained within a single business process or unit of work, and its primary purpose is to support the performing of daily operational tasks.
Analytical Information
Encompasses all organizational information, and its primary purpose is to support the performing of managerial analysis tasks. E.g. trends, sales, product stats, growth projections.
Online transaction processing (OLTP)
The capturing of transaction and event information using technology to (1) process the information according to defined business rules, (2) store the information, and (3) update existing information to reflect the new information.
Transaction Process system (TPS)
Basic business system that serves the operational level (analysts) in an organization. E.g. payroll, order-entry system.
Online analytical processing (OLAP)
The manipulation of information to create business intelligence in support of strategic decision making.
Business intelligence
A broad, general term, describing information that people use to support their decision-making efforts.
Decision Support System (DSS)
Models information to support managers and business professionals during the decision-making process.
Sensitivity Analysis
Users change the value of one variable repeatedly and observe the resulting changes in other variables.
What-if analysis
Checks the impact of a change in assumption of the proposed analysis.
Goal-seeking analysis
Finds the inputs necessary to achieve a goal such as desired level of output.
Executive Information System
A specialized DSS that supports senior-level executives within the organization. An EIS differs because it contains data from external sources as well as internal.
Consolidation (EIS)
Involves the aggregation of information and features simple roll-ups to complex groupings of interrelated information. E.g. tracking financial info at regional level.
Drill-down (EIS)
Enables users to view details, and details of details. E.g. from monthly, to weekly, to daily, to hourly.
Slice-and-dice
The ability to look at information from different perspectives. E.g. product sales during a given promotion. E.g. single product sales for all promotions.
