Muscular Physiology Vocabulary

Welcome to the electronic frontier of the 21st century in human anatomy and physiology. You will be learning about how muscles are responsible for movement, production of body heat, and maintenance of correct posture.    I wish you well in the learning of the vocabulary terms.

Front Back
Excitability
Is the ability to be stimulated or irritability.
Contractility
Is the ability to contract or shorten, allows muscle tissue to pull on bones.
Extensibility
Is the ability to extend or stretch, allowing muscles to return to their resting length after having contracted.
Question 4
Sarcomere
Is defined as the segment between two neighboring Z-lines (or Z-discs, or Z bodies).
Question 5
Z-Line
the disc in between the I bands) appears as a series of dark lines.
I-band
(for isotropic) is the zone of thin filaments that is not superimposed by thick filaments.
A-Band
(for anisotriopic). Named for their properties under a polarizing microscope An A-band contains the entire length of a single thick filament.
H - Band
Named for their lighter appearance under a polarization microscope. H-band is the zone of the thick filaments that is not superimposed by the thin filaments.
M - Line
Inside the H-zone is a thin M-line the disc in the middle of the sarcomere) formed of cross-connecting elements of the cytoskeleton.
Elastic filaments
Are composed of titin (connectin), which anchor the ends of the thick filaments to the Z - Line.
Titin (connectin)
Extends from the Z-line of the sarcomere, where it binds to the thick filament (myosin) system, to the M-band,
Dystrophin
Is a protein that holds the actin filaments to the sarcolemma.
Sarcolemma
Is the plasma membrane of a muscle fiber.
Sarcoplasm
Is the cytoplasm found in the muscle fiber.
Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR)
The special type of smooth endoplasmic reticulum found in smooth and striated muscle fibers whose function is to store and release calcium ions.
