How do you test the olfactory nerve?
Occlude one notril and have them smell something. Do the same thing on the other side.
How do you test the optic nerve?
Test eye site with the chart
How do you test the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nerves?
Check pupils for light accomodation, EOM's: have pt. follow finger up, down, left right; PERRLA
How do you test the trigeminal nerve?
Palpate the muscles of mastication while having pt. clench down. Do light touch test on forehead, cheeks, and chin. Have person say "now" when they feel it.
How do you test the facial nerve?
Ask person to smile, frown, lift eyebrows, show teeth, and puff cheeks.
How do you test the acoustic/vestibulocochlear nerve?
Rub fingers by the ears and ask them to tell you when they hear it with their eyes closed.
How do you test the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves?
Depress the tounge with a tounge blade and note the pharyngeal movement as the person says "ahhh" or yawns; the uvula and soft palate should rise midline, and the tonsilar pillars should move medially. Sensory is not ususally tested b/c the posterior 1/3 of the tounge is too hard to test.
How do you test the spinal accessory nerve?
Examine the sternomastoid and trapezius muscles for equal size. Have person rotate their head against resistance applied to the side of the chin. Ask the person to shrug their shoulders against resistance
How do you test the hypoglossal nerve?
Make sure the tounge protrudes midline. Have the person say, "light, tight, dynamite" and note that lingual speech is clear and distinct
