Front Back
Placebo?
A medication that contains no drug. Effects are dependent on mood, expectations and imagination.
Concentration of Drug?
The amount of moles in known volume
Dose?
The amount of drug administered.
Magnitude of effect?
Assumed to be directly proportional to the fraction of recpetors that are occupied (Y).E = maximal effect x Y
Potency?
The affinity of a drug for the receptor and measures the amount of drug needed for an effect.
Efficacy?
The measure of max effect that can be obatained form any dose.
Slope?
Slope of cureve, shows the speed of response. if steep samll increases in dose cause dramtic increases in effect.
Therapeutic effect?
A comparison of the amonut of drug that produces an effect and the amount that is lethal. The smaller the index, the smaller the difference between toxic and safe.
Agonist?
Ligand/drug that has affinity and efficacy for receptor. binds to receptor and drives to active form.
Partial agonist?
Has affinity but lower efficacy for receptor. In the presence of a full antagonist acts as a full agonist.
Inverse agonist/negative antagonist?
Has opposite effect to agonist, drives to inacitve form as higher affinity.
Antagonist?
Has affinity for receptor but no efficacy, so no effect.
Competitive Antagonist?
Competitive anatagonists compete with agonist for same receptor. Still produces max effect but needs higher doese (DECREASES POTENCY).
Non-competitive Antagonist?
Bonds to another receptor, not the same one as agonist. Even a higher dose can not produce max effect (DECREASE EFFICACY).
Allosteric modulation?
Allows manipulation of recpetor without blocking it. Can increase or decrease effect.
