Equation for Heat (temperature change)
Q=MC∆T
Equation for heat (phase change)
Q=mL
What is the caloric theory?
Heat was suggested as a fluid-like substance that was colourless and tasteless.
What is the joule theory?
Heat was suggested as a form of energy. Transfer of mechanical energy to a material causes increase in temperature, speed, height or any other physical state.
What is work?
Work is the product of force and displacement. Work occurs when energy is transformed from one form to another.
Does amount of energy change during a energy transformation?
No
What is the kinetic theory?
It suggests that all matter is made of atoms and molecules. These are in constant motion.
What are some of the assumptions of the kinetic molecular theory?
It applies to solid, liquid and gas. There is many particles and they are in constant motion. None are lost or gained and attraction and expulsion occurs.
Compare the differences of solid, liquid and gas.
Solid is vibrating in a fixed shape. Liquid is weaker than solid and has greater volume. They are able to move around. Gas is in constant, random motion.
How does a change of state occur?
If a solid changes to a liquid then the molecular receives energy and the particles break. Kinetic and potential energy is gained.
What happens when a transfer of energy occurs?
The temperature and speed increases. The particles begin to collide and transfer energy. Potential and kinetic energy is gained.
Define temperature
Measurement of average kinetic energy.
Define heating
Transfer of heat energy.
What affects temperature?
Mass, material and amount of energy
Does the temperature change while the material is melting?
No
