Assistive Technology
Any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities or any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use of an assistive technology device.
Low technology
Devices that are simple to make and easy to obtain.
High technology
Devices such as wheelchairs, electronic communication devices and computers.
Hard technology
Readily available components that can be purchased and assembled into assistive technology systems.
Soft technology
The human areas of decision making, strategies, training, concept formation.
Appliances
A device that provides benefits to the individual independent of the individual's skill level.
Tools
Require the development of skills for their uses.
