Many things that we read use persuasion to get us to believe, think, or feel a certain way. The author may use propaganda or other persuasion techniques to convince us that the stated opinion is correct.

What Is Emotional Appeal?

What is emotional appeal?	This is used to slant one's view through the use of emotions. It often tugs at our heart.
What is appeal to reason?	This uses reason or logical statements to appeal to us.
What is bandwagon?	This calls for participation because everyone does it.
What is testimony?	This is selling an idea or product by using famous names rather than sound evidence.
What is expert testimony?	This is a quotation from someone or an organization that is an expert in this area which helps support the author's opinion.
What is glittering generalities?	These make claims without giving facts and are often used in advertising and include flowery words. They have a "feel good" quality about them.
What are generalities?	These make claims - usually gives a number of positive examples without backing it up with specific research.
What is citing statistics?	These are numbers, percentages, and/or ratios that support the author's opinion in some way. Often times it is taken from research.
