What was Jefferson Davis's punishment?
He was put under house arrest for two years then was later pardoned by Johnson by 1869.
How was life different in the South after the Civil War?
Cities were ruined, the economy was devastated, bitter hatred, still though secession was right, didn't want to become one with the north again, planter aristocracy's wealth depleted
Who led the Freedmen's Bureau?
General Oliver O. Howard
In which area did the Freedmen's Bureau suceed?
Education, and to a lesser extent providing food for the freed men.
What was Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction?
Lincoln's plan was known as the Ten Percent Plan
What did the 10% Plan consist of?
Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction. He felt that it should be leniant, so it would be easier for everyone to move on. It stated that states could be readmitted to the Union if 10% of its voters took an oath of allegiance and pleged to abide by its emancipation.
What was the Wade-Davis Bill?
The plan of the Republicans of congress. It required that each state plege a 50% oath, stronger safeguard for emancipation, and military rule. It was pocket-vetoed by Lincoln.
What was Johnson's reconstruction plan after Lincoln's death?
It was very similar to Lincoln's. It would require that states ratify the 13th amendment, repeal secession, repudiate war debts, disinfranchise confederate leaders, plus the requirements of th 10% plan.
What does disinfranchise mean?
To take away the right to vote.
What southern law limited the rights of blacks? (they couldn't vote, testify, handle weapons, serve on juries, and if they didn't get a job they would be arrested)
