Spinal Immobilization-Supine Patient

Steps to properly secure a supine patient with potential spinal compromise to a spine board using spider straps and a foam head block

Directs assistant to hold and maintain neutral in-line stabilization of the spine and do not release until asked

Assess CMS in all four extremities (circulation, motor, sensory)

Measure for and apply appropriately sized extrication collar

Verbalize padding the voids (neck, lower back, knees)

Move patient safely onto a spineboard via log roll (remember to check thoracic and lumbar spine for DCAP-BTLS); head leads the count

Situate patient on the spineboard without spinal compromise via scissoring (head leads the count)

Secure shoulders and feet

Secure torso, pelvis, and legs, avoiding the knee joint

Secure head (remember to take C-spine and have assistant hold with the head block)

Secure hands and feet appropriately (if patient is conscious, have them hold their hands; if unconscious, secure with a triangular bandage)
Step 12
Reassess CMS in all four extremities
