1. Stress  (stres) | 
								
Definition- Mental and physical
response of our bodies to the changes and challenges of our lives. Example- I have had alot of stress in my life since the I have began helping take care of my cousins children. |

2. Stressor (stres-or) | 
								
Definition- A physical, social, or
psychological event or condition that causes the body to adjust to a specific
situation. Example- A large stressor in my life was the decision to return to college. |

3. Adjustment  (ad-just-ment) | 
								
Definition- The attempt to cope with
a given situation. Example- College took quite an adjustment for me but after a few weeks I developed a routine. |

4. Strain (strain) | 
								Definition-
The wear and tear the body and mind sustain in adjusting to or resisting a
stressor. Example- Within my life there has be allot of strain on my body due to my love of baseball. |

5. Eustress (eu-stress) | 
								Definition-
Positive stress that presents opportunities for personal growth. Example- I had an eustress stress when I went to CNM for the first time. |

6. Distress (dis-tress) | 
								
Definition- Negative stress that can
have a negative effect on health. Example- The distress I have been experiencing at home is having an effect on my health. |

7. Fight-or-flight response (fight-r-flight-re-sponse) | 
								
Definition- Physiological reaction
in which the body prepares to combat or escape a real or perceived threat. Example- My mothers cat believes that children are a threat to her and responds by fight-or-flight. |

8. Homeostasis (ho-me-o-sta-sis) | 
								
Definition- A balanced physical
state in which all the body's system function smoothly. Example- While at home in my room I experience homeostasis and function to my full extent. |

9. Adaptive response  (a-dapt-ive-re-sponse) | 
								
Definition- Form of adjustment in
which the body attempts to restore homeostasis. Example- When I am stressed or experiencing a crisis' and I am trying to calm down my body is having an adaptive response. |

General adaptation syndrome (GAS) (gen-er-al-ad-ap-ta-tion-syn-drome) | 
								Definition-
The pattern followed in the physiological response to stress, consisting of the
alarm, resistance, and exhaustion phases. Example- When my body is experiencing the different steps of "stress' fight-or-flight' overload" (GAS) is the fight within my body internally to restore the total balance also known as homeostasis. |

11. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) (aw-tuh-nom-ik-nur-vuhs-sis-tuhm) | 
								Definition-
The portion of the central nervous system that regulates bodily functions that
a person does not normally consciously control. Example- My friend injured his autonomic nervous system causing him to not be able to control his walking in a car accident. |

Sympathetic nervous system (sym-pa-thet-ic--nur-vuhs-sis-tuhm) | 
								
Definition- Branch of the autonomic
nervous system responsible for stress arousal. Example- My sympathetic nervous system be came aroused when I realized finals are next week. |

13. Parasympathetic nervous system (par-uh-sim-puh-thet-ik-nur-vuhs-sis-tuhm) | 
								Definition-
Part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for slowing systems stimulated
by the stress response. Example- I wish my parasympathetic nervous system would slow my stress response even further during finals week. |

Hypothalamus (hy-po-thal-a-mus) | 
								Definition-
A section of the brain that controls the sympathetic nervous system and directs
the response. Example- Someone who can't be sympathetic to others may be concerned they do not have a hypothalamus. |

Epinephrine (ep-i-neph-rine) | 
								Definition-
Also called adrenaline, a hormone that stimulates body systems in response to
stress. Example- During my baseball game the epinephrine released acts like fuel giving me the energy to play the entire game to the best of my ability. |
