Morphologically variable, seed without fertilization, modified short shoots so thorns, small shrub/tree. many leaves vaguely 3 lobed. secondary veins end only at teeth or points, not at gaps, on margin. fruit "apple"

Tree leaf whitish green on bottom. fruit edible, with prominent persistent calyx. brised leaf tissue turns black (spotted leaves)
