Broken hair is called?
Abraded. Caused by excessive stretching and/or traction.
Split ends have 3 technical names...
Fragilitis Crinium, brittle hair, triCHOPtilosis (think of the word chop) These can be temporarily "sealed" but cutting them is the only permanent solution.
The technical term for matted hair?
Pilica Polonica. Caused by excessive chemical lightening or backcombing.
Knots the run along an individual hair shaft are called?
Nodules, knotted hair, or Trichorrexis nodosa. Caused by poorly performed chemical services, mechanical damage, or inherited defect. Think of "lumps" on the hair shaft.
Physical knotting of multiple hair strands is called?
Trichonodosis. Caused by vigorous towel drying or rubbing against a pillow.
Grayness or whiteness of the hair is called?
Canities (ka-NEESH-eez). Caused by loss of pigment as a person ages, extended illness, nervous strain, or heredity.
What is "ringed" hair?
When bands of gray and dark hair exist.
An abnormal amount of hair where only lanugo hair usually appears is called?
Hypertrichosis, hirsuties (hur-sue-sheez), or superfluous hair.
Beads formed on the hair shaft are called?
Monilethrix.
Psoriasis is?
A disorder with thick, crusty patches of red irritated scalp resulting from an autoimmune disease of the skin. -Refer to physician-
Pityriasis is?
Dandruff. Chronic scalp condition with excessive flaking, accumulates on scalp/shoulders. Itchiness, tightness, & irritation.
Pityriasis Capitis Simplex is known as?
Dry Dandruff. Clear flakes. Can be treated with frequent shampooing with a medicated shampoo.
Pityriasis Steatoides is?
Greasy or waxy dandruff. Oily flakes combine with sebum in clusters. Appear yellow.
