Urinary System Vocabulary: A

Welcome to Mitchell's Cosmic Adventure, an online Human Anatomy and Physiology electronic classroom for the 21st Century. This set A of two vocabulary flashcards will focus on the URINARY SYSTEM and it's ORGANS. ProProfs has designed three different learning modes into their flashcard software. Please take advantage of: (1) Memorize Mode; (2) Quiz Mode; and (3) Flashcard Mode. Thank You!

Question 1
Urinary System
Is also known as the renal system, produces, stores and eliminates urine, the fluid waste excreted by the kidneys
Renal System
It's purpose is to eliminate wastes from the body, regulate blood volume and blood pressure, control levels of electrolytes and metabolites, and regulate blood pH.
Question 3
Kidney
Are bean-shaped organs that serve several essential regulatory roles in vertebrates. They regulate the balance of electrolytes in the blood.
Retroperitoneal Position
Means posterior to the parietal peritoneum, against the posterior wall of the abdomen.
Question 5
Renal Hilum
Its recessed central fissure where its vessels, nerves and ureter pass.
Question 6
Renal Cortex
Is the outer portion of the kidney between the renal capsule and the renal medulla.
Question 7
Renal Medulla
Is the innermost part of the kidney. The renal medulla is split up into a number of sections, known as the renal pyramids.
Question 8
Renal Pyramids
Are located inside the inner kidney. They consist of tubules, which collect urine from the outer kidneys and transfer them to the calyces, which store urine before it passes to the ureter and bladder.
Question 9
Renal Columns or (Bertin Columns)
Is a medullary extension of the renal cortex in between renal pyramids. Each column consists of lines of blood vessels and urinary tubes and a fibrous material.
Question 10
Renal Papilla of Pyramid
Is the location where ther enal pyramids in the medulla empty urine into the minor calyx in the kidney. Transitional epithelium begins to be seen.
Question 11
Renal Corpuscle(s)
Is the initial blood-filtering component of a nephron. It consists of two structures: (1) a glomerulus and (2) Bowman's capsule.
Question 12
Renal Capsule
Is a tough fibrous layer surrounding the kidney and covered in a thick layer of perinephric adiopose tissue. It provides some protection from trauma and damage.
Question 13
Renal Pelvis
Is the basin-like or funnel-like dilated proximal part of the ureter in the kidney. In humans, the renal pelvis is the point of convergence of two or three major calyces.
Question 14
Major Calyces
Are chambers of the kidney through which urine passes.
Question 15
Minor Calyces
Are chambers of the kidney through which urine passes. The minor calyces surround the apex of the renal pyramids.
