What are values?
Standards of behavior.
What is a value system?
Organization or those standards; code of conduct. This influences your belief system.
What are the common modes of value transmission?
1. Modeling: be a professional; teachers are out models.2. Moralizing: entire code of values. 3. Laissez-faire: "I don't care attitude!"4. Rewarding and punishing: used a lot in parenting.5. Responsible choice: encourage kids to explore their values. Teaches kids to way their consequences.
What is altruism?
The concern for welfare and well being above yourself.
What is autonomy?
The right to self-determination (respect patient right to their decision.)
What is human dignity?
The respect for inherent worth and uniqueness of all people.
What is integrity?
Nurses are rated #1 for this. Acting in accordance with appropriate code of ethics and accept standards of practice.
What is social justice?
Accepting moral, legal, part of ethics (don't discriminate).
What is bioethics?
Responsible research, genetic enhancement, environmental ethics and sustainable health care.
What is clinical ethics?
Bioethics that is at the bedside. Common ethical issues: end of life care, DNR/ DNI, abortion, etc.
What are the principles of bioethics?
1. Autonomy: respect right of patient and surrogates.2. Nonmaleficence: cause no harm.3. Beneficence: benefit the patient, wave risk & benefits. 4. Justice: act fairly. 5. Fidelity: keep promises (e.g. never abandon a patient).
What is Ethical Agency?
The ability to behave in an ethical way.
What is the Virtue of Nurses?
Competent, compassionate, trustworthy, conscientious, self interest is patient care, and they have integrity.
Who made the Nursing Code of Ethics?
The ANA (American Nurses Association).
What are the Nursing Standards of Practice?
The standard of professional performance and standard of care.
