Top Amino Acid Flashcards

Amino acids are used in every cell of your body in order to build proteins that you need to survive. Did you know that amino acids have a two-carbon bond? One of the carbons is part of a group called the carboxyl group, which is made up one carbon and two oxygen atoms. The second carbon is connected to the amino group. Amino means there is an NH2 group bonded to the carbon atom.

Scientists have discovered over 50 amino acids, but only 20 are used to make proteins in your body. These 20 types of amino acids can be categorized into one of three groups: essential amino acids, nonessential amino acids, or conditional amino acids. Can you identify some amino acids belonging to each group? Don’t worry if you can’t, because these flashcards will teach you all you need to know about amino acids and the science behind them!
