Canine Developmental Periods
The events that occur during each of these periods can greatly affect the rest of their lives. It is important to be aware of the significance of each developmental period because the types of training may differ accordingly.

Compulsion Training
Compulsion Training
Compulsion training as a training style that involves the use of force as a means to teach a new behavior or cue, thus creating a foundation for the new behavior based on negative motivation. ABC believes all new behaviors and cues should be learned through shaping and positive reinforcement, thus creating a foundation for the new behavior based on positive motivation.
Obedience training should not begin until a dog is at least six months old.
Using positive-based training methods, obedience training can begin at ages much younger than six months.
“Counter Conditioning”
To pair any and all experiences between the puppy and the things she fears with all the things she likes.
Optimum Bonding Period
Begins at 7 Weeks
Optimum Bonding Period
The time during which a puppy is most impressionable and open to bonding with other dogs and/or people. Owners with puppies of this age should be strongly encouraged to focus on proper socialization during this period.
General Socialization Period
7 - 16 Weeks
General Socialization Period
Typically, dogs who exhibit nervous or fearful behavior are thought to have been abused. Dogs who do not receive adequate socialization during the socialization period can sometimes be rehabilitated, but the process can be time-consuming and laborious. Dogs who are not properly socialized have a much greater chance of biting someone.
If dogs are capable of learning prior to reaching six months of age, and if in fact they should be socialized ideally starting at seven through sixteen weeks of age, then why are most basic training classes only open to dogs sixteen weeks and older?
Most puppies will not have received the necessary vaccinations to be safely brought out in public around other dogs. In order for a puppy to be admitted into most basic obedience training classes, she must have received the proper vaccinations.
Proper Socialization
The act of teaching a dog not to react by desensitizing her to those things she will encounter in daily life.
Proper socialization is:
Exposure of a puppy to many situations and environments. All exposure needs to be introduced at the dog’s pace to ensure a positive experience and to avoid a negative reaction.
Desensitization
Under-socialized dogs often over-react to many common things, such as other dogs, strange noises, cars, bicycles, new people, people who are different than their owners – shorter, taller, wear glasses, wear a hat, etc.
